These data breaches and thefts are due to a lagging business culture. I found some fresh and original thinking from the author of “IT Wars” - http://www.businessforum.com/DScott_02.html - I urge every business person and IT person, management or staff, to get hold of a copy of "I.T. Wars: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium." It has an excellent chapter on security, and how to scale security for any organization, any budget. It also has a plan template with all considerations. Our CEO has read this book. Our project managers are on their second reading. Our vendors are required to read it (they can borrow our copies if they don't want to purchase it). Any agencies that wish to partner with us: We ask that they read it. Do yourself a favor and read this book – BEFORE you suffer a breach.

This is pretty dicey stuff. Hope their insurance was paid up. You have to be REAL careful about releasing this kind of data to the opposition. Consult with the attorney you are working for every single day if you have to. It takes almost no time to blast out a keyword search. Going through the data correctly takes 3x as long, easy.

I've updated probably 10 systems so far with SP3 and have had zero problems. I've used windowsupdate as well as the Network install, which clocks in at 350+ megs.

Not a bad article, but I prefer to use Volume Shadow Copy services on all my workstation and server installs. Our Home Server product will do this for XP and Vista workstations, and StorageCraft has an excellent VSS implementation for Servers, and Win2k machines. The per-seat may be a little higher, but Windows Home Server can't back up Server product.

You can certainly offload your VSS data offsite, and I would suggest a hard copy in the form of a detachable USB2 or NAS device.

When something croaks, you need to bring it back as fast as possible. Reloading OS software and downloading stuff is going to kill your recovery time.
